Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Head of Environment, the Environment Specialist shall be responsible for designing and planning the prevention, control & remediation of the environmental health hazards in relation to Education City and all establishments of Qatar Foundation, through development, implementation and on-going refinement of environmental health, policies, procedures, programs, ensuring compliance with the local, state and international rules, regulations and norms.
Key Result Areas:
• Developing a composite environmental-plan and organizational systems to meet the environmental norms for disposing waste that would have a variety including the laboratory chemicals and medical waste, besides the general organizational waste
• Providing technical support, identifying resources, anchoring the identification of workplace environmental hazards and recommending appropriate controls and Environmental behaviours initiatives.
• Being responsible for development and implementation of the environmental policy, procedures and systems of the organization and identification of the relevant objectives for the organization’s environmental management system.
• Organizing and providing support to the development of effective centre and branch campus teams in the area of chemical safety.
• Continuing to support the growth, development and process of environmental quality as an integral part of our goal to achieve Operational Excellence.
• Making practical suggestions in reference to the adoption of and implementation of various renewable and non-renewable energy resources in Qatar Foundation in the order of preference setting an example as the lead organization of this country
• Studying the processes in each of the departments/ branch campuses/ establishments under the umbrella of Qatar Foundation and orienting to the constituent activities therein, to identify the respective sources of pollution and environmental impacts.
• Identifying all the environmental aspects in relation to the activities and operations performed in the various establishments.
• Developing and proposing the criteria for the determination of significance of different environmental aspects, and evaluating the respective environmental aspects through impact assessment.
• Identifying all applicable environmental rules, regulations and other legal requirements and compiling an appropriate ‘Register of Regulations’.
• Developing, implementing, continually improving and adapting the environmental health programs to ensure their adequacy, suitability and effectiveness at all times.
• Creating a comprehensive inventory of all waste products - solid waste, effluent fractions and emission constituents, in relation to each establishment, identifying the monitoring parameters for the discharge levels and developing systems and processes to treat, contain and control them to be within the acceptable/ permissible levels.
• Conducting environmental health surveys demonstrating planning & selection of tools, designing of appropriate Questionnaires, effective implementation of field activities with authentic data collection, accurate analysis of the findings and reliable inference making.
• Furnishing guidelines and recommendations to deal effectively with a variety of possible environmental emergencies to enable the custodians to respond effectively in such situations.
• Developing, implementing and monitoring an environmental emergency response plan, catering to the needs of the organization, conceptualizing the plans for an effective response and verifying the performance to ensure reliability of the arrangements on an on-going basis.
• Developing and establishing environmental campaigns to further the environmental causes through specific awareness and understanding-generation with respect to aspects like waste reduction, re-use and recycling, energy efficiency, energy management and water conservation.
Skills
• Should have a Bachelor’s level degree or Diploma in Environmental Health or an equivalent qualification in the Environmental Health Sciences.
• Should be familiar with developing/ devising the Environmental Health Systems, programs, procedures & policies.
• Should have experience of pursuing projects related to Environmental Health aspects and impacts.
• Have experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team with demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, sharing responsibility and work load as necessary.
• Ability to read, interpret and implement the applicable environmental laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
• Ability to deal with people in a manner that demonstrates sensitivity, tact and professionalism, appropriately recognizing and reacting to the cultural differences while delivering the services.
• Evidence of demonstrated analytical abilities.
• Should possess good written and verbal communication skills both in English and Arabic languages and be able to effectively communicate with officials of the environmental bodies like SCENR (Supreme Council for Environment and Natural Reserves).
• Basic computer skills with proficiency in MS Office (including word, excel, power point, MS outlook etc.) and ability to hunt the required professional information through internet.
• Willingness to participate in professional meetings, conferences and work-shops.
• Be able to drive light vehicles and passes a current driving licence.
• Ability to develop and propose proactive environmental measures demonstrating the attributes of innovation, result orientation and corporate social responsibility.
• Ability to test and analyze the air-quality issues to address the complaints and concerns with respect to indoor air-quality and internal environment.
