Professional Background
William Derban has over 12 years’ experience as an international development professional, private sector development and microfinance specialist. A multi-skilled executive, William is a critical thinker with expertise in establishing market based solutions and corporate partnerships to tackle social and environmental issues. William has a deep passion and experience in developing innovative solutions to financial services in Africa and Asia. William is the CEO of Derban Consulting, a development consultancy providing innovative market based solutions in development. The consultancy specializes in financial inclusion, sustainability and community development. Prior to setting up the consultancy, William was the Head of Community Relations with Barclays Africa where he managed the Community Investment Strategy across 10 countries in Africa. He has special expertise in linking informal and formal financial systems and promoting savings led microfinance. William is on the Africa board of Junior Achievement and has served as a member of the Investment Panel of experts for the UK Department of International Development (DFID) Financial Education Fund. In 2006, he received the Ghanaian Professionals Award (GPA) 2006 for Banking and Finance in recognition of his work in Ghana and the UK in terms of financial inclusion. William earned his PhD in Development Finance and Microfinance from the Nottingham Business School in the UK. He also taught at the University of Birmingham and Birmingham City Universities.
