Qatargas releases 2013 Sustainability Report

Qatargas, the largest LNG company in the world, has issued its latest Sustainability Report, an update on the Company’s economic, social and environment performance in 2013. The report, which is the fourth such report by Qatargas, also includes data for the past 4 years as well as insight into the Company’s future activities towards its 2015 vision.

Commenting on the Company’s performance, Sheikh Khalid Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the CEO of Qatargas, said, “For Qatargas, our dedication to becoming the world’s premier LNG company means we continue to focus on becoming known for our people, innovation, operating excellence and corporate social responsibility. This forms the foundation of our approach to sustainability, an approach that continues to develop in alignment with the sector and national frameworks. In 2013, we achieved significant milestones in several areas. They included a 20 per cent reduction in total hydrocarbon flaring from LNG assets, and a reduction in water consumption, as compared to the previous years. In safety, we proudly accomplished 20 million safe work hours for our Jetty Boil-Off Gas Recovery Project. Our Qatarisation rate advanced to 26 per cent and the average training hours per employee rose from 24.7 hours in 2012 to 28.7 hours in 2013. These key developments were combined with a 70 per cent rise in our social and community investment spending.”

On the report preparation, he added, “The annual preparation of our sustainability report provides us with an invaluable opportunity to reflect on how far we have come as a company. As we move into our 30th year of existence, I am proud to report that our impressive history continues to grow, and I am motivated by what the future holds for our Company and Country.”

Some of the key stories that are detailed in the report include the health and safety updates such as the launch of the 10 Lifesaving Rules, future flare reduction plans, insight into the Company’s production and global distribution chain; update on the Qatargas team including female employment, and information on how the Company ensures its ethical and responsible conduct.

This year, one of the additional features of the Report is a three-page fold-out summary, which demonstrates a measurable alignment of Qatargas’ performance to the Energy and Industry Sector Sustainability Programme, the Qatar National Development Strategy 2011-16 and the Qatar National Vision 2030.

In preparing the Report, Qatargas has used national and international reporting guidelines produced by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association, American Petroleum Institute, International Oil and Gas Producers Association, and the Qatar Petroleum Health, Safety and Environment Regulations and Enforcement Directorate. The Report achieves a GRI G3.1 application level A, which has been corroborated by the GRI.
