ExxonMobil reunites with Kuwait English School to support annual student 'Physics Challenge'

As part of its ongoing commitment to support educational initiatives in Kuwait and generate student interest in math and science, ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Kuwait Limited sponsored the Kuwait English School (KES) 'Physics Challenge' for the third year in-a-row as the largest contributor and supporter.

This year's 'Physics Challenge' gathered 100 KES students from grades 8, 9 and 10 that were divided into teams of five. Students were given a number of construction and mechanical materials and three hours to construct a boat with a sail that is able to transport a small cargo of weights.

The panel of judges included a KES teacher, an A level student, and three other professional experts across Kuwait. The judges tested and assessed the students' boats based on their design, construction, and performance quality. The winners of this year's challenge were the "0" Kelvin team from year 10. Second place winners were the Ribbets and in third the Extendables.

ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Kuwait Limited President, Mr Faycel Bensaid said, "ExxonMobil is in a continuous drive towards generating student interest in math and science through initiatives that encourage the bright young minds of tomorrow to develop analytical skills, learn about innovation and science and excel in the subject of their interest."

ExxonMobil Kuwait is a co-founder of the largest nationwide annual science competition launched in 2008, the Kuwait Science Fair. ExxonMobil also supports several other educational programs in Kuwait.

With KES, ExxonMobil sponsored the 'Physics Challenge' for the third year in a row to help the school in its efforts to provide students with science activities that will help them grow and excel.

Kuwait English School Head of Science, Mr. Pete Dryhurst said, "KES has stimulated hundreds of students with this competition in the last seven years. We are very proud of every one of our students who rose to the challenge this year, proving that with a little guidance and support, young students are capable of yielding outstanding results. We'd like to thank ExxonMobil for its contribution to this year's challenge and for its continuous investment in our activities. We look forward to having them on board with us for next year's challenge."

Founded in 1979, Kuwait English School educates over 2400 students in KG/Prep, Primary and Senior High School levels. The School is an associate member of ECIS (European Council for International Schools) and a member of BSME (British Schools in the Middle East). KES has also established the Millennium Centre in 1997 to provide older students with an independent working environment in their transition from high school to university so they can benefit from greater freedom and personal responsibility.
