Yalla Shammer Initiative Launches Cleaning Campaign

Around 60 members from Jabal Natheef community gathered today to clean the streets surrounding their homes, schools and work area. This cleaning campaign was launched as part of the" Yalla Shammer" Initiative, organized by Ruwwad's Youth and supported by the British Council.

"The Jabal is not clean due to simple math. There are 62 garbage bins in Natheef used by almost 75,000 residents. This is a ratio of 1 garbage bin for every 1,2010 resident. The normal ratio is 1 garbage bin for every 250 residents. This is a serious problem." Reported Hanan Almoghrabi, Coordinator of Yalla Shammer Initiative.

Abdullah Abu Fannas, an intern, held the microphone at the start of the campaign and yelled "Al-sha'ab yureed tantheef Al-Natheef!" (The people want to clean Al-Natheef!). Everyone applauded and repeated the yells as they put on their gloves and declared full attack on all trash in the street!

"Our next step should be a community-wide awareness campaign about cleanliness" Stated Mariam Abu Adas, Mousab Khorma Youth Education Fund Officer."

The activity ended with a ceremony where youth created a banner with hand prints, and children gathering in circles repeating loudly "We will not through anything on the floor from now on!"
