RasGas headquarters bags ‘green’ gold

The RasGas Headquarters tower has been awarded Qatar’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for commercial interiors with Green Building Rating System - Gold Level by the US Green Building Council (USGBC).
The LEED is the USGBC’s leading rating system for designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy efficient and high performing buildings.
According to a communiqué, RasGas employees recently completed their move into the 57-storied new headquarters in West Bay. With 54,000sq m of usable space in the south tower of the Palm Towers, the building’s hexagonal shape provides another landmark building in Doha’s expanding commercial district.
The LEED Gold award took into account the building’s interior green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community.
RasGas worked closely with its contractors and sub-contractors to ensure that the building would feature energy efficient systems such as water saving fixtures, efficient air-conditioning and ventilation systems, lighting and temperature controls, materials with recycled content and the reuse of existing furniture.
RasGas managing director Hamad Rashid al-Mohannadi said: “Achieving the LEED Gold certification is a demonstration of RasGas’ commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility, which is aligned with Qatar’s National Vision 2030.
“Improving practices and performance in the areas of sustainability; water efficiency; energy and atmosphere; materials and resources; innovation and design is integral to our vision to be one of the world’s leading energy suppliers striving for excellence.”
The interior of the new RasGas headquarters was designed and fitted to achieve LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies.
The LEED verifies environmental performance, occupant health and financial return. The LEED was established for market leaders to design and construct buildings that protect and save precious resources while also making good economic sense.
“Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems,” said USGBC president and CEO Rick Fedrizzi.
“The new RasGas Headquarters project efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come.”
