Omantel honours SMEs for business excellence

Omantel Business Excellence SME Awards to recognise entrepreneurs in the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector were presented at a glittering function held yesterday at Al Bustan Ritz Carlton Hotel. 

Dr Amer bin Awadh Al Rawas, chief executive officer of Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel), making an opening speech said, "We at Omantel value the vital role of the SMEs in the national economy and in creating job opportunities. With this in mind, we have launched the Omantel Business Excellence SME Awards. This initiative is a reflection of our corporate social responsibility which is fully supported by Omantel Board of directors as well as the investors."

"In support of the government's efforts, and as part of our commitment to the development of SMEs, we are proud today to celebrate young entrepreneurs who have made their mark by rewarding and recognising those who practice excellence and make it a habit. "By implementing Omantel SME Business Excellence Awards initiative, using Omantel's wide reach and capabilities, we aim to build awareness of the importance of SME development, supporting the government's plans and providing opportunities for SMEs to network," he added.

Dr Amer further said, "Omantel continues its initiatives towards increasing the awareness of the society on developing SMEs and supporting the government plans in this regard. Based on our corporate philosophy 'together' and on our commitment to involve our business partners in this important initiative, we are pleased to announce our promising program."

Ali Bin Masoud Al Sunaidi, Minster of Commerce and Industry, and deputy chairman of the Supreme Council of Planning was present on the occasion. Giving an overview of the awards, Todd Dick, vice-president of Omantel corporate business unit, asserted that the launch of the Omantel Business Excellence SME Awards is aimed at accelerating the economic growth of Oman.

Those who presented the wards to the winners  included Khalil Abdullah Al Khonji, chairman, Oman chamber of commerce and industry; Dr  Salim Al Ruzaiqi, chief executive officer of the Information Technology Authority (ITA);  PDO managing director  Raoul Restucci; and Abdulkader Askalan, chief executive officer of Oman Arab Bank and Omantel Board member.

Winners
Award for the 'Best performing company (small enterprise)' was bagged by Lab Scientific &laboratory supplies while the award for the 'Best performing company (Medium)' went to Ajyal HR solutions & Services. The award for the 'Best New Entrant' went to Graphix Rainbow Colors Digital Production and Design. The award for Turnaround Success Story of the year was grabbed by   Bait Al Fannar. Bani Adam Carton Recycling Services won the Community Contribution award.

The winners will be provided with the opportunity to network with other industry members and peers. In addition Omantel will put together a comprehensive package that includes free participation in Omantel Business Alliance events and membership, free consultancy service for a period of 1 year to help build tailor made telecommunication needs that best suits their business, one year of free exposure through newspaper advertisements and hoardings, free public relations support for a period of one year in addition to advertising support through free bulk SMS to help promote the winners businesses. 

At the end, jury members Ms Manal Mohamed  Al Abdwani,  chairperson of Board of Directors, Oman Flour mills Co; Mohamed Issa Al Zadjali, vice-chairman, Muscat Press and Publishing House (MPPH); and  Pankaj Khimji, director of Khimji Ramdas, were honoured on the occasion. Dr Hatim Shanfari, another jury member, did not turn up at the event.
