Huawei Releases Annual Corporate Sustainability Report

Huawei , a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has released its latest annual Corporate Sustainability Report which details the company’s contributions and priorities in driving the sustainable development of the economy, society, and the environment over a newly set 5-year global roadmap. The report was compiled in compliance with the G3 guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) disclosing Huawei's efforts and practices in a systematic and standardized manner.

The report provides a detailed overview of Huawei's commitments with regard to its corporate social responsibilities, measured against an eight-point CSR management system based on International Organization for Standards’ ISO26000 guidelines. The system includes specific benchmarks such as: bridging the digital divide, caring for employees, fair operations, environmental protection, social contribution, supply chain CSR management, stakeholder communications and safe operations.

As outlined in the report, last year Huawei optimized its CSR management system based on the ISO26000 guidance in addition to establishing a global CSR Committee to ensure that its strategy is effectively implemented worldwide.

"We adhere to a corporate strategy of establishing a more favorable social image and exemplifying good corporate citizenship everywhere we operate by incorporating CSR into our business operations," said Sun Yafang, the chairwoman of Huawei.

Amongst the highlights from 2011 include Huawei’s consumer business group initiating a social accountability management system in alignment with the SA8000 framework—an environmental, health, and safety system (EHS)—with the goal of being certified in 2012. The company as a whole also launched a new EHS management system based on the ISO26000 standard, collecting and analyzing data from more than 100 representative offices in order to locate high-risk areas around the world.

Within the Middle East, Huawei has been active in the CSR arena particularly in the creation of opportunities through education, working with leading operators such as Etisalat and Batelco—as well as top universities and government entities—to establish training centers that provide insights on the latest global technologies, host regular workshops, and facilitate international knowledge sharing.

For its global CSR efforts, Huawei was recently honored with a certificate of merit at The Pinnacle Group’s Global CSR Summit 2012—one of the world’s most prestigious events for dialogue on corporate social responsibility.
