Enpark and Accor Majid Al Futtaim Hospitality conduct bulb recycling campaign

As part of its commitment to promote green initiatives in Dubai, the Energy and Environment Park (Enpark), a member of TECOM Investments' Sciences Cluster, extended its support to Accor Majid Al Futtaim Hospitality to reduce their carbon footprint across eight hotels.

Conventional light bulbs are being replaced with new energy-efficient bulbs across eight Accor Majid Al Futtaim' hotels including Pullman Mall of the Emirates Dubai, Pullman Deira City Centre Hotel and Residence Dubai, Novotel and Ibis Deira City Centre, Suite Novotel and Ibis Mall of the Emirates, and Ibis Al Rigga.

Marwan Abdulaziz, Business Development Director of the Sciences Cluster, TECOM, said: "Enpark's bulb recycling campaign has come a long way since its launch in June 2010. Over 45,000 conventional bulbs have been recycled to date. Enpark is privileged to provide a platform for Dubai's hospitality industry to adopt sustainable initiatives. We hope that our milestone collaboration with the Accor Majid Al Futtaim Hospitality will encourage more organizations to come forward and participate in similar activities."

Stephane Del Prete, the Director of Human Resources of Accor Majid Al Futtaim Hospitality, said: "The bulb recycling campaign with Enpark marks yet another chapter in our Group's comprehensive CSR plan. Responsibility towards our environment and local community forms its core component. This initiative is also part of our response to guests who prefer to stay in a hotel that endorses eco-friendly standards."
Most ordinary bulbs use toxic mercury. Disposing them in the trash often breaks their fragile glass casing, releasing mercury into the environment. Even if the bulbs manage to remain intact after being trashed, these products likely end up in landfills and incinerators where they will eventually release toxic chemicals.

Recycling crushes the bulbs in a controlled environment and eliminates such risks with almost all parts of the old bulb being re-used.

Initially aimed to include the offices and residential units within the TECOM free zone clusters, the campaign has grown to include the participation of major organisations such as Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Microsoft Gulf FZ-LLC.

Enpark adopts a proactive approach through various initiatives to educate and assist the community on espousing green activities and contributing to reducing the region's carbon footprint.
