Dubai Chamber newsletter celebrates World Environment Day

The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Centre for Responsible Business-published second newsletter of the year, CSR Al Youm, celebrates the World Environment Day under the theme: Green Economy and takes a look at the green economy concept and the process of transition and its link between the environment, job creation and poverty reduction.

The newsletter points out that with uncertainties in the global economic outlook, a window of opportunity has opened up to reshape the patterns of growth as promoting a transition towards a green economy can't only help to address climate change but, if the right policies are put in place, can also pave the way to a more inclusive and sustainable global economy.

It further explains that the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) describes green economy as one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reduces environmental risks and ecological scarcities. It also hints at achieving three main strategies including reduction of carbon emissions, enhancing resource efficiency and preventing of loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Coming under the title, Turn Green into a Business Opportunity, the article states that moving to a greener economy requires a major structural change by developing and disseminating new sources of clean energy while emitting less CO2 through technological and operational innovations within industries which will necessarily mean a reallocation of some resources from higher-to lower-carbon-intensive sectors, entailing considerable employment and income shifts.

Also, the newsletter focuses on the UAE Green Economy Strategy launched by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, which is a long term national initiative to build green economy in the UAE under the slogan 'A green economy for sustainable development'. Aligning with the UAE Vision 2021, the goal of the strategy is to build an economy that protects the environment as well as an environment that supports the growth of the economy.

The newsletter sheds light on the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network which is a group of UAE based companies that are committed to sustainability and are already actively working towards a green economy in various ways that echo the six major fields of the government's strategy for sustainable development, namely Green Energy, Green Economy, Green City, Green Policy & Programs, Green Living and Green Tech. It also highlights the member companies' contribution to awareness-raising initiatives in supporting the concept of green economy.

The newsletter also covers other related topics like the Centre for Responsible Business's hosting of the 2012 International Green Awards Summit, Dubai Dialogue Responsibility Matters Conference, and the Give and Gain Day. This year's Give and Gain Day was attended by over 140 volunteers from different organisations across Dubai who promoted employability in the country through a series of seminars, presentations and roundtable discussions held at schools, universities and local charities. This program benefitted more than 200 beneficiaries from Manzil Centre for Challenged Individuals.

The Centre for Responsible Business was established in 2004 by Dubai Chamber to foster corporate integrity and to promote Dubai as the region's gateway for global commerce by promoting transparency and rule of law. It is the leading centre of expertise in business ethics and corporate social responsibility in Dubai.
