Conference on sustainable urbanisation next month

MUSCAT: With the aspiration of highlighting how a sustainable community can contribute in improving the quality of human life and ecological systems, Oman's First Sustainable Urbanisation Conference will take place from September 19 to 20 at Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz Carlton Hotel. 

The conference endeavours at gathering government, non-government organisations, urban professionals, academics, and community-based associations to discuss and address the growing issues and challenges related to urbanisation. 

It will also serve as a common platform for these actors to forge partnership, come up with action-oriented proposals needed and to reaffirm their commitment in creating sustainable urban and liveable communities for tomorrow. 

Organised by OITE conferences under the auspices of the Muscat Municipality, Ministry of Housing and Supreme Committee for Town Planning, the event is expected to be attended by more than 200 delegates including high-level government officials, mayors, city leaders, policymakers, senior-level executives, developers, architects, engineers, planners, designers, corporate social responsibility managers from across the industry including — government, healthcare, energy, transportation, banking and finance, real estate developers, tourism, contractors, consultants, members of the civil society, media, academia and others. 

This first conference of its kind in the Sultanate will be attended by renowned speakers and industry experts. Among the local and international speakers at the conference will be Her Highness Sayyida Tania bint Shabib Al Said, president of Environment Society of Oman; Jeffrey Lagomarsino, deputy secretary-General at Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organisation (IREO); Gerfried Ramsauer, chairman of Consatt Ltd Oman; Engineer Haidar bin Abdul Hadi bin Qambar Al Lawati, planning expert at the Ministry of Housing; Khalfan Al Shueili, architect at the Ministry of Manpower; professor Awni Shaaban, architectural engineer, programme coordinator, Civil and Architectural Engineering Department, College of Engineering, Sultan Qaboos University; Professor Architect Jan Gehl, founding partner of Gehl Architects, Urban Quality Consultants, Copenhagen; Christa Diener, vice-president of Design, Engineering and Planning, Muriya Tourism Development; Aurel von Richthofen, assistant professor for Architecture and Computer Aided Design, German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech), and Edward McNally, chief executive, Tabreed Oman. 

Panel discussions 
Presentations and panel discussions will focus on various themes including sustainable urban development in the fields of infrastructure; health and human development, green technologies for cities/municipalities; environment; disaster prevention (management and reconstruction), and digital city. 
Sustainable Urbanisation Conference is also supported by the Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organisation (IREO) and Environment Society of Oman .
