This study attempts to address the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR), its development over the years, benefits that can be achieved as a result of CSR as well as ways of evaluating and regulating its practices. The paper does so in light of successful international experience to draw lessons from best practices in this area. In addition, the paper highlights prominent local initiatives to identify factors that motivate the private sector to undertake CSR as well as particular areas of interest and challenges. The study concludes with a number of proposals to promote CSR in Egypt through active participation of the government, the private sector and civil society. Interest in CSR in Egypt has been on the rise since the 1990s as relations between the government, the public sector, the private sector and civil society have undergone several developments. The private sector has gradually replaced the public sector as the main driver of economic activity. The focus of the government has turned to providing a conducive environment to the growth of local and international investments. The role of civil society has increased whether in economic and social development or in monitoring the government and the private sector.
