MAKKAH: The Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) will open a seminar on corporate social responsibility with the participation of the private and public sectors in Makkah on Sunday.

Chairman of the MCCI’s social responsibility committee Tariq Najmi said Al-Faisal University’s Prince Sultan College is participating as an academic partner in the seminar and its sponsors include Binladin Group and the Tazej Restaurants chain.

“The two-day seminar aims to increase awareness about the need for participating in corporate social responsibility programs,” Najmi said in a statement in Makkah on Saturday.

The official also commended the lead role taken by prominent businessmen such as Abdul Rahman Fakieh, Al-Sharif Mansour Abu Rayash and Yousuf Al-Ahmadi in discharging their social commitments as industrialists and businessmen.

He thanked Minister of Social Affairs Yousuf Al-Othaimeen for the ministry’s support and encouragement for the seminar.

Twelve major topics related to CSR will be discussed in the four sittings taking place on Sunday and Monday.

The first sitting will focus on evolving strategies for social responsibility in medium and small establishments. It will also cover subjects such as the responsibility of large industries to transfer technology to small and medium enterprises.

The second sitting will discuss the methods of developing corporate partnerships to develop social responsibility systems in Saudi society.

The role of large companies and banks in promoting social responsibility will be the major topic of the third sitting. It will also discuss ways to benefit from zakat and endowments for the promotion of social responsibility activities.

The fourth sitting will discuss the role of the public and private sectors in the area, Najmi said.
