Port of Salalah wins Corporate Social Responsibility Award

Port of Salalah has recently won the Containerisation International Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award 2012 for the company’s environmental and community focus that exemplifies corporate sector leadership in engaging its employees and local community.
Port of Salalah had been shortlisted for two categories, Corporate Social Responsibility and Investment in People by Containerisation International, one of the most respected journals in the world of shipping. Other finalists in these two categories included Sociedad Portuaria Regional Cartagena, DP World, PD Ports and Port of Tyne.
Peter Ford, CEO at Port of Salalah, who received the award at the gala awards function in London, said, “We are extremely honoured to win this award, which I would like to dedicate to each one of our 2,221 employees. This is a tribute to the significance and impact you make by connecting and caring about people and environment. Every employee I have come across in Port of Salalah is driven to improve and enhance this connection. The stronger we are able to come together under the agendas of diversity and development, volunteerism, education, health support, and environmental impact mitigation, the stronger and better our company will be at facing its challenges in the future.”
Port of Salalah is managed and jointly owned by APM Terminals, which also picked up the award in the coveted International Terminal Operator of the Year category. The APM Terminals conglomerate, with its headquarters at the Hague in Netherlands, owns the largest global network of container terminals and manages over 25,000 people worldwide.
The award recognises the company’s effort in engaging with its 2,200 employees in volunteer activities, surveys and a CSR committee, as well as its commitment to a range of projects including summer school and internship programs, staff development and Omanisation, award-winning environmental practices, and committed donations to volunteer and educational organisations.
Port of Salalah has over 17 ongoing initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and waste, and minimise the negative impacts of its day-to-day opera tions on the marine environment. Port of Salalah won Green Habitat for the most eco-friendly and healthy workplace at the Oman Green Awards 2012 (Marine Emergency Response Services), and was runner up for two awards in 2011, on account of lighting and fuel efficiency projects.
The company also places great importance on investing in the educational development of its people and the younger generation. This year, Port of Salalah was the first company in Oman to announce its partnership with Outward Bound Oman’s Patron Company, committing to a three-year initiative where 216 youth (males and females in public school systems) from the southern Dhofar Governorate will attend outdoor courses specifically designed to increase confidence, employability and citizenship.
Additionally, each year since 2001, the Port of Salalah has provided internships across all departments to 20-75 university and college students. The company’s purpose-built training centre has provided free English and computer classes to the local community and day camps for employees’ children during the summer season, as well as continuous training for port employees through the year.
Port of Salalah announces its yearly CSR fund amount at the annual general meeting for shareholders in March of each year. The company had disclosed its 2011 donations amounting to RO 50,000 ($130,000) made to Volunteer Centres — Salalah and Mirbat and Taqah, Al Noor Centre for the Blind — Salalah, and Salalah Tourism Festival (RO 10,000 each).
