Gulf Air takes young Bahraini students on an environmental awareness tour

Three Bahraini primary school students, winners of the Ministry of Education's “Going Green” drawing competition, travelled on the national carrier Gulf Air recently to spend two valuable days in an eco-friendly camp in India.

The students, accompanied by their parents, took part in a number of activities during their stay at the Hornbill Eco-Friendly Camp near Kochi.

The “Going Green” drawing competition organized in association with the Ministry of Education, was one of the corporate social responsibility initiatives launched by the national carrier in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme.  The aim of the competition was to raise awareness of the national and domestic responsibility of “Going Green” through the eyes of young students.  Students from various primary schools in Bahrain took part in the drawing competition expressing their ideas about the environment, and winners of the three best drawings were given an opportunity to spend two days in an Eco-Friendly camp abroad to get first-hand experience and appreciation of the environment.

“We strongly believe that children are the leaders of tomorrow and it is during their childhood the foundation to mold their human personality, character, habits and appreciation for the environment in which they live in, is laid. Thus their exposure to different cultures and environmentally-friendly habits will have a positive impact on our nation’s future” said Maher Al Musallam, Gulf Air’s deputy chief executive officer.

The winning students, each accompanied by a parent and a Gulf Air representative, embarked on a learning excursion to remember. They participated in feeding and riding elephants, forest walking and hiking to watch birds’ species, and visiting a plantation and learning about cultivation of various  crops and plants firsthand from the farmers.

Muntathar Mohammed, aged 6, said “It is my first time flying, and I enjoyed it so much.  There were so many new things to learn and so many beautiful trees and plants.  I hoped to bring along an elephant of my own”.
Gulf Air continues to give back to the community through various corporate social responsibility activities such as sponsoring events, supporting charities and local initiatives.
