ExxonMobil Egypt sponsors launch of Ishraq Plus

Sponsored by ExxonMobil Egypt and in celebration of the International Literacy Day, Save the Children launched Ishraq Plus, a three-year program of literacy directed towards educating out-of-school adolescent girls in Upper Egypt and providing them with better life and economic opportunities.

Mr Andy Wells, Chairman and Managing Director of ExxonMobil Egypt, expressed his pleasure for ExxonMobil's constant support of the Ishraq Project stating that, "Education is the magical lantern that lightens the path towards progress and development and it is one of the main pillars of the advancement of nations. ExxonMobil's corporate social responsibility efforts primarily focuses on education; The Ishraq program sets a good example of such projects that aim to improve life and economic opportunities of 'out-of-school' rural adolescent girls and women in Upper Egypt. ExxonMobil kick-started its support of the Ishraq program in 2008 and has helped out over 1,000 girls in 21 villages in Beni Suef, Menia and Assiut. Capitalizing on the positive impact the Ishraq program has created in the past three years, today, ExxonMobil is very pleased to announce the extension of its support of the Ishraq Plus Project in 2011 for an additional 3 years through the ExxonMobil Foundation in partnership with Save the Children Foundation."

On the same note Mr. Geof Giacomini, Country Manager, Save the Children, stated that, "Save the Children believes in the power of partnerships to better serve the interests of children - especially girls - and is proud of our continuing relationship with ExxonMobil through the Ishraq Plus Project. Because of it, thousands of girls will be provided further chances to become full, active members of their families and communities."

Beneficiaries of the project emphasized and praised the dramatic transformation the project has brought about in their lives. "Ishraq opened up our eyes to a new world. Thanks to Ishraq I now have become an educated, enlightened girl who can effectively serve her community," said Amany Noshy, one of the participating girls.

The father of one of the participants, Laila, highlighted the change that he noticed in his daughter's life following her participation in the project. Laila's father expressed his heartfelt thanks to all who took part in such a fruitful project stating, "By reaching out to girls in Mansoura, numerous girls have now become educated and enlightened."
