Dubai Chamber awards four companies with CSR Label

Four major Dubai-based companies have been awarded the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry CSR Label for their efforts to become leading businesses in corporate social responsibility and sustainability.

Commercial Bank of Dubai, Standard Chartered, 3W Networks and FedEx were presented with the Dubai Chamber CSR Label during a special ceremony held at the organisation's head office recently. They are the second round of companies to be given this recognition standard by Dubai Chamber following the first CSR Label presentation in May 2011.

Hisham Al Shirawi, Vice Chairman, Dubai Chamber, presented the CSR Label certificates to the receiving companies. He said that through the CSR Label, Dubai Chamber is determined to identify best responsible practices, to establish a reference within the business community, and to encourage the adoption of international best practice with regard to CSR and sustainability.

He said: "Today, Dubai Chamber has acknowledged four companies that have shown exceptional performance in corporate social responsibility and sustainability. These companies are pioneers of CSR in the region and are helping to lead by example and demonstrate the increasing sophistication of Dubai's business landscape," Al Shirawi said.

"The CSR Label helps establish a new standard in terms of transparency regarding CSR challenges and will inspire the whole business community to develop their own strategies on responsible practices," he said.

"These winners send a signal to Dubai's business community that regardless of the type or size of the organisation, CSR can be incorporated across all its operations to the benefit of the business," Al Shirawi added.

Maher Hasbini, Managing Director - MEA Operations '&' GSP Planning '&' Development MEIA, FedEx, said: "With a global workforce of 290,000 members and providing service to more than 220 countries and territories worldwide, we understand the positive impact we can make on our communities and team members. FedEx remains firmly committed to being a great place to work, a thoughtful steward of the environment and a caring corporate citizen.

"The Dubai Chamber CSR Label is an initiative that provides a good platform for public recognition of corporate social responsibility efforts and contributions by companies across different industries. FedEx looks forward to participating in this initiative to generate more awareness of our corporate social responsibility," he said.

"FedEx would highly recommend Dubai Chamber's CSR programme to its customers, partners and suppliers as a very high value initiative making Dubai a first class market for local and foreign investors," Mr. Hasbini added.

Walid Gamali, CEO, 3W Networks, said: "One of our main objectives is to improve 3W Networks CSR performance by increasing awareness of the impact our company can have on the environment, market place, workplace and social community that we operate in. So far, we have mainly concentrated on community and workplace initiatives, however with the Dubai Chamber's sustainability framework and CSR Label, we are extending our objectives to involve an equal amount of time in each sphere of the framework, especially the market place and environment.

"We are very sure that other companies would stand to benefit from implementing this framework as much as we did," he added.

Peter P. Baltussen, CEO, Commercial Bank of Dubai, said: "The CSR Label is a unique accolade for corporate organisations to achieve and maintain. Dubai Chamber deserves commendation for launching the CSR Label, which could serve as a CSR benchmark in the UAE, as well as an effective catalyst to inculcate CSR in the UAE's corporate world. We would most certainly be willing to recommend this to our partners." Richard Bowcott, Regional Head of Brand and Sustainability, Standard Chartered, said: "We believe in promoting sustainable finance in business and we empower our staff to help tackle the challenges we face in our markets, from environmental degradation to ill health.

"We think the CSR Label is an excellent idea which puts Dubai Chamber at the forefront of raising awareness about CSR in the region. It is also an excellent way to showcase CSR work being done by companies such as Standard Chartered in the region," he said.

Developed by Dubai Chamber's Centre for Responsible Business the Dubai Chamber CSR Label is part of a learning programme which promotes CSR and sustainability in Dubai. Through the CSR Label companies are given access to toolkits, networking seminars and training workshops to assist them to adopt and implement CSR schemes.

Previous companies who have been awarded the CSR Label are Emirates Gas, Intercoil International LLC and Mashreq bank.

The Centre for Responsible Business offers a variety of educational, professional training and consulting services that are designed to increase a company's capacity to implement broad CSR programmes including business ethics, sustainability reporting and corporate governance.
