More often than not, I believe westerners—with the best of intentions—design international development projects without fully understanding the specific intrinsic aspects of the local culture and society. Whether consciously or subconsciously, such development projects end up reflecting certain western values and ideals without an adequate understanding of the local environment, and as a result do not achieve the desired objectives. This is where exactly my interest lies, in finding a job where I can bring about my multicultural background to impart knowledge on the design and implementation of development and social projects that can be better tailored to local culture and values. I have a passion for research as it enables me to have a good understanding of human behaviors and needs. I find the fields of governance and civic works more in-line with my interests which are geared more towards the public sector, or something is interested in the grey area between government and public, and I believe a position doing social research would be the best fit for me.
