CSR Interest & Background: Dimensions of Sustainable Development: A grounded theory approach to understanding the external and internal forces influencing the progression of sustainability in the United Arab Emirates

Sustainable development continues to gain traction worldwide as people and organisations start to understand the long term effects of the current practices. Businesses are seen by many as the main cause of these long term problems.
As a result, sustainability rapidly became a major component within the corporate strategy of any organisation.
The United Arab Emirate’s young economy is influenced by many factors such as religion and culture which have a direct effect on the perception and implementation of sustainable development. The problem is amplified due to the importation of regulatory and conceptual frameworks without the consideration of the context of the UAE.
To solve the problem of perception, expert managers were interviewed and a number of patterns have emerged pointing at the lack of understanding of sustainable development in the country. This is mainly due to the large amount of forces influencing this development.
The similarities with management process theory allowed for the integration of sustainable development within this process creating ‘the sustainable management process’ model supported by the findings.
